Maybe it is just me, but it seems that I am the only one who has not dealt with portfolios prior to this class, but I asked by very helpful group who seemed to be seamlessly handling all assignments if I were the only one who did not have experience with portfolios and they all told me I am not the only one. I still find that hard to believe as I listened to their conversation and checked out their exemplar portfolio examples. Mine were a hodgepodge of different portfolio examples while theirs were useful actually examples that I would be proud to produce.
Ryan and Kara supplied very helpful examples I will add here.
Ryan example
Kara example
Though I had no Ideas what kind of rubric to put together until I saw examples provided by John and compared my production to that of my teammates it was a very helpful exercise as it made this totally fuzzy far off vision of what the heck a portfolios is a bit clearer, not crystal clear but kind of like when you blink and your contact moves or rotates and everything is slightly out of focus but you can recognize them.
So I think I have got it. I am going to have to put together a online representation of myself as a professional teacher.
So thanks for all the patience and assistance from my cohorts, take care.

Hey Terry - I like your analogy of the contacts. Yes, it does feel like that, doesn't it? I, too, feel the task of putting a portfolio together a daunting one. For me, it's like all my experiences are whisking above my head, and I'm trying desperately to lasso in the most useful ones. At first I imagined that I wouldn't have enough archival material, but now I'm thinking that I may have too much - too much junk, that is. For me, the challenge is going to be pulling the best examples from the huge pile of unsuccessful projects that I, and my students, have created. It's really more of a sifting exercise. In addition, the challenge will be wording everything in a professional manner. I have never enjoyed, nor have I ever been very good at, trying to make things sound professional. I have another word for this gift, but it's not very nice. I found that so many of the portfolio examples lacked a certain genuine voice. Do you know what I mean? I found one in particular that classifies archives as "conceptual framework." What the hell is that? I had to click to it to see that all it was referring to was qualifications. I want my portfolio to be professional and yet reflect my personality. Then considering that I'm loud and obnoxious, perhaps I don't want it to reflect me at all, lol.
ReplyDeleteOK, I'm now going to age myself. I was before the educator portfolio requirement. I too have little to experience with producing portfolios. I use student portfolios for my classes but never produced one for myself. I am excited to work on this. I like the idea of culminating our experiences in this grad program.
ReplyDeleteTerry you are not alone. I too have not dealt with portfolios especially online ones. I did however create a portfolio for my undergrad. That one ended up being roughly 200 pages and was a hell of a lot of work. Needless to say I hope that I do not have to endure that experience again. Hang in there. It will be over soon!
